So much had happened that a year went by so fast just like a blink of an eye. It seems like just awhile ago that we heard about the news of pandemic outbreak in January and now we kind of find a way to navigate through the new normal. I like to think that I survived the year, yet there were several things I wish I should have done better.

Kicking off the year with new workplace and collogues have me realized skills that I acquired from my first job more than I ever thought. There is a saying that don’t choose your first job because of how much you can earn but how much you can learn, and that I can confirm it is a good advice. I worked with newly-start company setting up financial records, policies and procedures while I get to learn more about basic network infrastructure that provide us internet and mobile communication through out the country. Afterward I moved to become an accounting consultant. From that I learnt a great deal of company’s bookkeeping and tax declaration and financial reporting.

In my spare time, I took about 3 months learning basic html code and building my own e-commerce website using W3.CSS framework. I also start my first Linux experience by setting up Arch Linux on my main laptop and learning some basic command to install application package from Arch User Repositories. I still have a long way to go but learning Linux command is fun and a whole new level of understanding of how the computer works.

I always have this bad relationship with data storage. My first desktop have 80GB of sata HDD. My first laptop have 128GB of SSD (due to budget constrain and why not SSD). I also can’t afford external HDD back then. As you can see I don’t have much to store my data, mostly favorite movies and games. My oh my, as soon as I save up enough money I threw two hundred bucks on my vary own Synology 2 bay NAS DiskStation DS218j. I did consider building my own NAS but boy the electricity cost of running an entry level DIY NAS machine 24/7 is pretty high not to mention building and configuration headache. The Synology NAS doesn’t come with hard drive so I stuck with a single used 500GB 3.5 with no redundancy failed safe. Therefore, one of my goal this year is to upgrade my home server to 2TB RAID 1.

On the other side, I have been putting off a few major life’s things. I did not do great for my exam schedule. They say if you make the same mistake twice, it is no longer a mistake but rather a choice. I don’t think so and I’ll try again this year. My BMI is also way of the chart passing 30 mark sitting well in obesity territory. I’ve been ignoring my eating habit and just go for whatever and whenever I want.

It cost nothing to set your desire, so here are my wants for this year:

  1. Enroll in the class and properly prepare for the exam
  2. Having proper monthly budgeting plan
  3. Learn a new coding language
  4. Upgrade my home server to 2TB RAID 1
  5. Finally, a sensible eating habit

These are my reflection of 2020. How about you? What are the things that you are grateful for? What are the things that you wish you should have done better?
